Tribute To Roger St Louis

By Kazim Abasali December, 2020

Roger St Louis was born on the 20th of March, 1958.

Roger was the son of Cecil and Imelda St Louis, both deceased.

Cecil and Imelda St Louis

He was the brother of Guy, Cyril, Gerald, Ian (dec.), Sandra, Mariella, and Trevor (dec.). And he was the husband of Rita St Louis.

His primary education was attained at Arima Boy’s RC School. And he received his secondary education at St. Mary’s College (CIC) in Port of Spain.

South East Port-of-Spain Gov’t Secondary School was the school that Roger chose to teach. Being a teacher at South East formed a big part of Roger’s life. For he saw this school as an opportunity to go into a district that was not as easy with which to deal as others were, and apply Godly principles in his teaching methodologies.

For Roger was already serving God through his involvement with the Word Of Life Youth Prayer Group, and then with the People Of Praise Community, all situated in Arima.

So Roger looked for opportunities to use God’s mercy and love with his abiding faith.

In personal testimonies that were shared at the Zoom 9-nights prayer meetings for the repose of Roger’s soul since his passing, stories are being told of his many acts of love for others.

Roger treated his students of South East Port-of-Spain Gov’t Secondary School with the care and love as that of a parent. He saw the potential in every one of his schoolchildren.

For as recent as last year, he held reunions for his past students, together with their children, whom he considered his grandchildren. When these past students attended school he used to also take them to restaurants to eat and enjoy time together.

One such situation that showed his Christ consciousness was during his teaching years when he found out that one of his students had missed school for a week, and he sought out the reason why. The student explained to Roger that she wanted her other siblings to get schooling and she sacrificed her education for theirs.

Roger made sure that he provided for that student’s educational expenses out of his own pocket so she could attend school. She is now pursuing her PhD. She said it would not be possible to reach as far as she has without the kind support of Roger.

Roger was part of the Word Of Life Youth Prayer Group on Green St. Arima that was ministered by Auntie Babsie.

It was there that Roger was called by God to serve in greater ways. And he responded as he was being led in other areas.

He then joined the People Of Praise Community in Arima.

Established since 1989, the People Of Praise Community in Upper De Gannes Street, Arima, exists to foster goodwill through reaching out to others, especially youth and young adults through seminars, workshops, retreats, prayer, music with an emphasis on singing and music, counselling, personal development and faith formation programmes.

The People Of Praise Community led by Brother Winston Garcia has an active social outreach ministry inclusive of evangelizing and ministering to prison inmates, reaching out to immigrants and refugees along with distributing hampers of food, books, stationery and clothing on an ongoing basis to needy persons and families in Arima and environs.

When Roger emigrated to the USA, he started the People Of Praise Prayer Group in Brooklyn, New York, together with his wife, Rita, and Delano Gordon. Beginning humble prayer meetings were held at Delano’s home on Linden Blv., Brooklyn New York.

Roger made use of humour and music as an effective means of drawing souls to Christ with his personal preaching ministry. Whether these preaching methods took the form of talks, prayer meetings, retreats, workshops, or seminars, he applied his wit and creative approaches to inspire others.

Roger was actively involved at St. Matthews Catholic Church Parish in Brooklyn, New York.

He was a member of the National Catholic Conference in the USA. He traveled to different parts of the USA to attend conferences wherever they were held.

Roger was the organiser of excursions that he attended with a large group to visit Scranton, Philadephia: Charismatic Catholic Renewal at the Dioceses of Scranton, PA. held in the 1st week of August.

A big event every year was the singing on the hill after the Charismatic Catholic Renewal at the Dioceses of Scranton, PA. Roger lead the singing as a profound worshipping of God in Joy with all who attended.

Roger music ministry, besides leading the singing with the Group, also provided additional services, such as supplying speaker systems, and audiotaping and recording of events.

A man filled with the Holy Spirit is full of faith and fearless. Roger often visited certain areas in Brooklyn, NY to minister to the lost souls. He spoke about Jesus Christ being their Saviour.

This was a major part of his Godly mission in life.

Lennard Delano Gordon:

Your reward is sure, good and faithful servant. My brother, friend, and confidante.
Roger St Louis, May the Angels hasten to welcome you into happy paradise.

Robinson Mosi:

Condolences to Ms. Rita and Family. Sir was such a remarkable man. He will surely be missed. However, we know he is in the arms for the Lord. I will never forget him and all he has done for myself, and Class of 4A9 South East Post of Spain. He never gave up on us. His love for us all was pure and everlasting. Rest In Peace Sir. We will always Love and Respect You!!

Errol Mclean:

You have taught me so much not only in school, out of school. Also from my teacher to become a dear friend. RIP Sir. I still can’t believe it. I am still hearing you voice saying, “Errol, when I come back home we going to relax and sip on something”.

Natasha Simmons:

Hearing that a dear saint has passed is usually a sad time…I feel sad but also I have gratitude welling up in my heart…it was the testimony of Roger St Louis at a People of Praise Lenten retreat in 1994 at the Brazil R.C school that led an almost 20-year-old who was so lost and oppressed that she was wishing for life to just end, and who knew that she was days away from a mental break down and surrender of the will to live to be snatched from the jaws of death Hell & the grave.
I opened my heart to Jesus that day because Roger listened to the Spirit and made the call and one person stood up…Me.
I have NO REGRETS as that was my first step in my journey of a thousand miles with my Lord & Saviour Jesus who not only saved my soul but my LIFE.
Thank you Jesus
Rest in the arms of your Saviour Roger St Loius

Laurie Walcott:

Ecclesiastes 3:1

Turn! Turn! Turn! by The Byrds
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may…
